STEM at the Library

The Library offers a range of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experiences for all ages, designed to spark curiosity and build confidence. Programs like Makerspace Labs invite kids, teens, and adults to explore, create, and learn together.
Mobile STEM carts - featuring tools such as 3D printers, laser engravers, heat presses, and design software - expand access to resources many community members wouldn’t otherwise experience.
Participants learn by doing. They build problem-solving skills, confidence, and connection, supported by Library staff and peers. Low-tech, hands-on projects are celebrated alongside high-tech tools, ensuring everyone can participate. Collaboration, experimentation, and shared discovery are at the heart of every program.
“With the STEM carts, [participants] can get a new machine they’ve never used, access the manual, and then explore. Staff is there to provide guidance and support but really building self-efficacy, confidence, and critical thinking skills,” said Amelia Chea, Adult Services Librarian.
At the Library, STEM learning is free, welcoming, and open to all. What will participants gain through Library STEM programs? Teen Services Librarian, Kayla O'Connor, said,
“I hope that they feel more confident approaching new technologies and activities. I want them to know it's okay (and encouraged) to be a brand-new beginner! I hope that they feel empowered to try new things.”
Aside from the learning aspect, Makerspace Labs offer an opportunity to build community. According to Amelia Chea, Adult Services Librarian:
“One of the most heartwarming aspects of the Open Lab is witnessing the intergenerational connections that are forming. People of all ages are collaborating on projects and building a sense of community.”
Philanthropic support helps make Library programs thrive - providing access to innovative tools, creative projects, and shared learning experiences for children, teens, and adults across Kitsap.
Thank you to the generous donors, Friends groups, and community partners who help bring STEM to life at the Library!
